This course is to explore modern politics (both structure and major issues) of Japan in the post war era. The course will begin with a brief overview of the factors that lead to the post World War II Japanese Constitution and political structures. The country will be studied in the context of the globalization and the changes of the political dynamics in the Northeast Asia. Being the amalgamation of Western and East concepts in philosophy, economics, and politics, the question will be asked if the experiment that is post war Japan succeeded in forming the ideal modern state or if not, where we are to go next to obtain this goal.
