Contemporary Japan: A Literary Journey

Catalog description

This course explores varying aspects of Japanese contemporary society through literature. Students will critically examine commonly held cultural notions and beliefs of Japan. While analyzing popular literary works of Japan, we will pay special attention to key themes in Japanese society, such as: the concept of family, the role of gender, traditional versus modernity, the perceptions about age or generational differences, among others. All told, students will garner a new appreciation for the Japanese experience as represented through literature. This course is taught in English. Satisfies Magis Core: Literature.
