Business and the Common Good

There are many ways that Business helps society and helps people to thrive. In this course we will explore how business can bring about good for society, and examine some of the ways business owners and leaders have intentionally attempted to use business as a means of contributing to the common good — to serve humanity, bring about dignity, and even leverage it for societal equity and well-being of the poor. Creighton students who succeed in business will have the unique ability to help transform culture and society for the better if they choose to leverage business for the common good. We all know about Patagonia and TOMS Shoes, but there are hundreds of examples to critically consider. We will also consider the ways that religious traditions have encouraged people to demonstrate their ethical commitments to humanity through business practices (sometimes in a way counter to what is the norm). Many examples will be considered and explored. Assignments will include class presentations, response assignments, and papers.
