Perfectionism and the Good Life
Cornell University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course explores the concept of perfectionism across multiple areas of daily life, including life at a demanding university. Building on research in psychology, sociology, and cultural studies, we will explore how perfectionism is defined and measured, and how it relates to mental health, motivation, and well-being. Readings will include scientific articles, book excerpts, and essays that analyze perfectionism across areas like academic achievement, sports, medicine, art, social media, wellness, and the workplace. Films, reflective writing, and discussion-based activities will help us consider how perfectionism might shape performance, creativity, and fulfillment in different domains. The course concludes by considering some emerging ideas for moving beyond perfectionism toward healthier and more sustainable goals.
