Art and Disability

Catalog description

This course explores the aesthetics of disability in modern and contemporary art and performance. From canonical artists like Pablo Picasso to Frida Kahlo, bodyminds that disrupt normative expectations have long served as sites of creative tension. By bringing theories of disability and embodiment into conversation with the arts, students will examine how notions ofableism shape mainstream understanding of aesthetics, function, and form. Surveying a range ofworks from the twentieth and twenty first centuries, students will explore how disabled and non-disabled artists alike have reimagined ideals of beauty and normativity by centering disability.
