Modern Romance: Sex, Love, and Union Formation in the Internet Age

Modern Romance examines how the social ecosystem in which students live shapes their sexual and romantic relationships. A central component of this course is a focus on understanding what makes sexual assault on college campuses so prevalent. Drawing on a framework that utilizes the concepts of “sexual projects,” “sexual citizenship,” and ‘sexual geographies,” the course explores the role of social and cultural influences, physical spaces, and peers and how they interact to shape students’ experiences and interpretations of sex, relationships, and sexual assault. Through readings and discussion, assignments, and student interactions, we seek to empower students to think about ways to improve their individual agency, improve communication skills, and understand personal goals regarding relationship formation.
