Catalog description

This course will consider efforts to reinvent romantic love, marriage, and parenthood in the French, Russian/Soviet, and American traditions. We will study theoretical writing from influential utopian and feminist thinkers alongside works of literature and film that have imagined new modes of love and family relations, with special attention to the position of women and attitudes to love and marriage in revolutionary movements. Primary sources will be supplemented with scholarship on the history of revolutionary movements, utopian communities, and their aftermaths.
