Restoration Ecology: Rebuilding Damaged Ecosystems

This course introduces the theory and practice of ecological restoration, emphasizing how core ecological principles inform restoration planning and decision-making. Students will apply ecological theory to real-world terrestrial and aquatic restoration scenarios, predict ecological outcomes, and develop site-specific restoration plans using case studies and applied problem solving. In the lab, students will take multiple field trips to visit restoration sites in-person and meet with practitioners. We emphasize collaborative work through team-based restoration projects, constructive peer review, and engagement with restoration practitioners to understand real-world constraints and decision-making processes. The course is designed for students wishing to engage in restoration ecology and will give students the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge.
