Commercializing & Capitalizing Tough Tech
Cornell University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Tough tech ventures — those operating at the frontier of deep science, infrastructure, climate, energy, and life sciences — demand a fundamentally different approach to commercialization and capitalization than conventional software or consumer startups. This course equips graduate-level students with the analytical frameworks, financial tools, and strategic instincts needed to build, fund, and scale ventures where time-to-market extends well beyond the standard venture capital fund horizon. Through applied analysis of real technologies, capital structures, and regulatory environments, students will develop the skills to assess opportunity, structure financing, navigate policy, and communicate compellingly to the full range of stakeholders — from patient capital investors to government grant-makers — who make tough tech ventures viable.
