Law, Judgment, and Artificial Intelligence

This course examines legal judgment—interpretation, discretion, proof, and institutional decision-making—in an era of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence. Rather than treating AI as a technical subject or a matter of regulatory policy, the course takes a doctrinal and institutional approach, asking how law allocates authority, manages uncertainty, and legitimates decisions when predictive and generative systems are introduced into legal practice. Through cases, statutes, and administrative materials, students will study how courts, agencies, and lawyers exercise judgment under conditions of uncertainty; how prediction differs from legal reasoning; and whether AI systems can assist, audit, or undermine legal judgment.
