Gender at Work in U.S. History

Catalog description

This course examines relationships between gender, work, and class in U.S. history from the nineteenth century to the present. How has work been organized along gendered lines, both at the workplace and at home? What is the historical relationship between gender and the development of capitalism in the United States? How have social categories like race and gender historically shaped working-class politics? How have labor unions dealt with issues of inequality between different segments of the working class? To what extent has public policy challenged or reinforced these forms of inequality? By exploring these questions, this course uncovers how gender has influenced, and been influenced by, the experiences and politics of work in U.S. history.
