Catalog description

The class will be on the topic of women’s, gender, and feminist histories from and about the African continent. We will approach this topic via three axes: the history of women in Africa – what have been major developments affecting women throughout African history, and how have women shaped history; gender history in Africa – how does gender analysis help us understand events in African history; and African feminist analysis – what is African feminism and how have feminist activists and scholars based in and around the African continent theorized gender, power, and liberation, what methods does their work offer us, and how do these analyses enrich historical understanding?
