Cornell University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The global wellness economy is a $6.8 trillion dollar economy comprised of industries that enable consumers to incorporate wellness activities and lifestyles into their daily lives. (Global Wellness Institute, 2025). Aspects of the wellness concept are firmly rooted in several intellectual, religious, and medical movements in the United States and Europe in the 19th century. The tenets of wellness can also be traced to the ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome and Asia, whose historical traditions have indelibly influenced the modern wellness movement. “Wellness and Spas” is designed to educate students about wellness through the framework of health, hospitality, and design, with the hope that they will adopt healthier wellness habits as a result. This course will take a historical look at the evolution of wellness and compare with the current health and well-being in global communities and society. From wellness tourism, healthy eating, physical activity, mental health, workplace wellness, spas and springs, this course will examine new wellness-oriented business ventures, investments, and partnerships beyond the menu of products and services traditionally offered.
