Catalog description

In this graduate seminar, students will explore the complex intersections of fashion, beauty, and power from a global and interdisciplinary perspective. Drawing from diverse texts, we will examine how appearance norms and ideals are constructed, negotiated, and contested across various contexts. Throughout the semester, students will collaborate on an interview project, providing an opportunity to integrate theoretical analysis with the development of practical research skills in qualitative methods. In addition to examining current issues in the fashion and beauty industries, students will gain experience with digital qualitative data analysis software needed to conduct rigorous and insightful research in dress, beauty, and fashion studies.
