FWS: Ways of Reading, Ways of Seeing

Catalog description

What does it mean to approach a text critically? In this course, students will explore a range of primary texts (novels, stories, films) alongside critical texts that offer both interpretive frameworks and models of interpretation. Through a process of discussion, guided drafting, and revision, students will learn how to articulate an informed and nuanced position on a text. Readings will vary depending on the instructor's thematic focus; please consult the Knight Institute website and course syllabi for specific sections. Theoretical readings may include such writers as Lauren Berlant, Michel Foucault, Sigmund Freud, Donna Haraway, and Audre Lorde; fiction and film may include works by writers and filmmakers such as Octavia Butler, Han Kang, Franz Kafka, and Bong-Joon Ho.
