Biomedical Engineering Design I introduces students to the theory and practice of engineering design in the biomedical context through a hands-on, team-based project experience. Students identify unmet clinical or biomedical needs and progress through problem definition, concept generation, design specification, prototyping, and verification and validation. The course emphasizes human factors, regulatory and ethical considerations, product lifecycle thinking, and professional documentation, drawing on case studies and design tools used in industry. By the end of the semester, students develop and test part of a prototype while building skills in collaboration, technical communication, and reflective design practice. This course is the first in the two-semester capstone design sequence: BME 4080 and BME 4090 .
