Why does one mutation lead to a disease state in some individuals but not others? To solve this mystery, we must look beyond single genes and into the interactions between alleles. In this course, students will analyze how systematic mutant collections can reveal essential aspects of eukaryotic biology. Through primary literature, small group discussions, and problem solving, students will integrate classic tools like complementation and genetic mapping with modern strategies like whole genome sequencing and CRISPR-based genome editing to explain the complex relationship between genotype and phenotype.
