Catalog description

This asynchronous, 3-week course introduces students to basic concepts in the scientific method, research techniques, genetics, evolution, biochemistry, cell biology, and the anatomy and physiology of major organ systems. We will compare the structure and function of organ systems among major classes of animals (e.g., invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals), and we will learn about different species that evolved unique or “extreme” adaptations in these systems, enabling them to survive and reproduce in various environmental conditions. Topics are taught in pre-recorded lecture videos, allowing students to learn at their own pace. Projects and mini exams are assigned each week to assess student progress. In the final project, students create a new animal and explain how its physiology reflects adaptions to its environment/habitat.
