Mental Health and Social Justice in the Deaf Community

Catalog description

An examination of the intersection of Deaf culture, mental health, and social justice with attention to how systemic oppression, audism, and ableism impact the mental health experiences of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Through historical and contemporary lenses, the course stresses advocacy efforts, community-based healing practices, and services that are culturally responsive to the needs within Deaf, DeafBlind and hard of hearing communities. Students will engage with first-person narratives, readings, discussions, guest speakers, and media, created by Deaf, DeafBlind, and hard of hearing individuals.
