(Also offered as HIST 2841 .) Major themes in modern Southeast Asian history from the 17th century to the present: growth of global commerce; western imperialism; nationalism; emergence of independent nation-states; challenges of the post-independence period. Emphasis on the region's largest countries: Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
