Catalog description

This course examines the history and structure of social welfare institutions in the United States. Students will examine a variety of social problems that include those who are impacted by poverty, oppression and discrimination and will explore their own values and beliefs related to social issues. Specific areas to be explored include homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, health care access, abuse and aging. The student gains an understanding of the change process on a micro, mezzo and macro level as related to at-risk and vulnerable populations. This course must be completed with a grade of 'C' or higher.
