Precalculus with Review I

Catalog description

MATH 1120 is the first course in a Precalculus sequence consisting of MATH 1120 & MATH 1121. The concepts, skills, reasoning, and rigor expected of successful Calculus students is developed in this sequence. MATH 1120 will begin by outlining the analytical structure of the Elementary Functions (linear, quadratic, absolute value, root, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, and piecewise.) with special emphasis on communication: language, notation, representation, and rigor. The general concept of function will be fully developed from definition, extensively investigated, and used as an analytical tool. Calculus situations and descriptions will be used to motivate the application of Elementary Functions and inspire an analysis, which includes function behavior and characteristics, function arithmetic, and modeling. Supporting algebraic concepts and skills are included in the curriculum as necessary.
