Catalog description
This course provides an in-depth study of voluntary and federaly mandated benefits, including The Affordable Care Act, Social Security, Worker's Compensation, Unemployment Compensation, Family and Medical Leave (FMLA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). Students examine laws, procedures, forms, and handbooks summaries for each topic. This course also provides in-depth study of voluntary benefits: those benefits employers most commonly choose to offer to help attract and retain employees. The course will focus on health insurance options (HMOs, PPOs, traditional carriers, HSAs), life insurance options (basic life, supplemental life, term life, and accidental death and dismemberment), short-term and long-term disability options, pension/retirement plan options, pay-for-time-not-worked options (holidays, vacations, sick leave, personal leave, bereavement leave, jury duty, military leave, and other PTO options), and miscellaneous benefit options (tuition reimbursement, child/elder care, safety equipment, social and sports programs).
