Advanced Mine Safety

Catalog description

This course is restricted to students presently studying under the direction and oversight of an approved apprenticeship program, working in partnership with Columbus State Community College. This class covers all topics specified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Students who plan to work in mines, quarries, or sand and gravel pits should consider this course. Topics covered include miners' rights, an introduction to the work environment, recognition and avoidance of hazards, a review of emergency medical procedures and first aid, fire warning signals and fire fighting procedures, health and safety aspects of assigned tasks, line authority descriptions for supervisors and miners' representative, rules and procedures for reporting hazards, and instruction in the use, care, and maintenance of self-rescue and respiratory devices.
