History of Mathematics

Catalog description

This course examines the global historical evolution of mathematics and mathematical thought from ancient civilizations to the present day. Topics include numeral systems, computational methods, algebra, geometry (Euclidean and non-Euclidean), probability, calculus, and selected areas of modern mathematics. The cultural, social, and historical contexts in which mathematical ideas emerged, the contributions of influential mathematicians, and the evolving role of mathematics as both a science and an art are examined.
