Women and Gender in American History

This course examines the history of women and gender in the United States from the colonial era to the present day with an emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries. It analyzes how women shaped and were shaped by major events in American history. It traces changing ideas about gender, femininity, masculinity, and sexuality, and it explores how these ideas have influenced popular culture, domestic politics, “private” life, and a multitude of other arenas. The class emphasizes intersections among gender, race, ethnicity, religion, region, and class.
