Catalog description

Archaeology has often been described as the discipline of 'things' or of the material traces of the past. This course seeks to enhance students' engagement with the material world as a means of complementing text-based instruction in the tradition of experimental archaeology and hands-on history. Through weekly activities, students will create and engage with ‘things’, reflect critically on differences in reading about and making things, and gain a critical understanding of material culture studies in archaeology and beyond
