What makes a person in the U.S. Latina/o/e? Why is "Latine" normally considered an ethnicity and not a "race"? What are the shared experiences and cultural practices that group them? This class explores the many facets of the Latina/o/e experience in the U.S. and the specific histories and cultures that have shaped the trajectories of particular Latine sub-ethnic groups and their representations. We analyze colonization over native cultures, political changes pre-Twentieth Century related to the Caribbean and the U.S.-Mexico borders, the Twentieth Century political events connected to migrations from all over Latin America and the diverse social movements developed by Latine groups in the US in the last 70 years or so. Further, we discuss contemporary issues such as immigration in the Twenty-First Century, production of Latine literature, music, film, visual arts and popular culture as well as media and political discourse stereotypes about Latine population.
