MUSC 380N
Performance Ensemble: New Mus
Columbia College Chicago · Fall 2026
Catalog description
The New Music Ensemble is a large acoustic/electro-acoustic chamber orchestra that performs music specifically created for and by its performers/composers in any style and for the instruments available. Typically, the NME has between 20 to 25 students who perform in a minimum of two concerts per semester offering a variety of works ranging from classical to film-music, pops/jazz, music for games, and experimental, including arrangements of existing repertoire. The NME offers all participants, in particular the performing composers of the Music Department, the opportunity to write for the group although this is not a requirement for participation in the NME. Weekly rehearsals of work in progress in a stimulating positive setting offer both composers and players to come to a deeper understanding of essential orchestrational and ensemble considerations, to hone ensemble skills, and to work out musical ideas in the most effective way possible for the available instrumentation. The goal of each semester is to produce music that makes both the composer and the ensemble sound at their best, and capable of entertaining an audience at a high level of accomplishment.
