Catalog description

Theory for Musical Theatre is a foundational course designed for Musical Theatre BA and BFA students, as well as other students interested in musical theatre. The course explores key music theory concepts with a focus on practical application for performers. Topics include notation, rhythm, tonality, harmony, and aural skills, all examined through genre-specific music relevant to musical theatre. Students will develop skills in reading and understanding musical notation, recognizing intervals and chord structures, and analyzing scales and chord progressions with a focus on critical listening. Through a combination of written theory exercises and performance, students will build both theoretical knowledge and the ability to apply concepts to real-world musical scenarios.
