Catalog description

In this course, students will explore mathematical relationships, patterns, and phenomena that connect in vital ways to various genres of art and the natural world. The major course topics are: self-symmetry and its connection to the golden ratio, Fibonacci spiral, fractals, and tessellations; the nature of infinity and near-infinity; and numerical patterns that arise from nature and humanity. Explorations of these topics will be rooted in mathematical understanding, and supported by physically constructing artifacts. Assignments will include creative projects using concepts from class discussions.
