DANC 285A
Hip Hop and St Dance (1crhr)
Columbia College Chicago · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course focuses on intermediate-level foundational techniques of Hip Hop dance and related street dance forms (e.g., breaking, locking, popping, house, or other street styles). Whereas the Foundations course introduces students to a range of forms, this course offers the opportunity to study one form in greater depth over the course of the semester. Students develop proficiency in intermediate-level movement vocabulary specific to the form being taught, as well as core Hip Hop techniques and concepts, including isolations, groove, dynamic range, footwork, freestyle, and musicality. Emphasis is placed on performance quality and artistry through both set and improvised movement. Students also engage with the history, ethos, and sociocultural context of the chosen form through videos, discussions, and participation in Hip Hop/street dance-centered cultural events.
