This studio-based course introduces students to Hip Hop dance techniques and related street dance forms, and their cultural, historical, and socio-political contexts. Through embodied practice, students learn foundational techniques and concepts from dance styles including: breaking, locking, popping, and house. The course prioritizes physical training, creative exploration, and community-building through practices like cyphers, improvisation, and group choreography. Students also engage in discussions and in-class activities to explore the cultural significance and history of Hip Hop, emphasizing its roots in Afrodiasporan traditions and its connections to social movements. By centering the body as a site of knowledge, this course fosters an inclusive and transformative learning environment that honors individuality, builds community, and emphasizes ethical engagement with Hip Hop culture.
