This course provides the necessary basis for understanding how we hear the world around us. Building upon fundamentals of acoustics and hearing physiology, the course investigates key aspects of hearing perception and the field of psychoacoustics. It examines how the human auditory system processes the information it receives, that is, how physical attributes of sound translate into perceptual attributes such as loudness, pitch, and timbre. The course also examines issues relating to hearing loss and conservation, in particular the problem of environmentally induced hearing loss in contemporary society, in an effort to prepare future audio and music professionals and practitioners to protect their own and others' hearing and to create a safer, more responsible sonic future.
