Catalog description

This course provides an overview of the world of sound and audio in its various manifestations, including music, communications, sound in linear and non-linear media, sound art, and sonification. It introduces students to basic concepts and terminology related to sound, audio, and music, but it is not a theory course. Rather, the course examines aspects of our sonic world through various related lenses, including audio production, music creation and consumption, and acoustics and perception. It enables students to explore and form historical, cultural, and aesthetic connections between diverse practices and trends, practitioners, and sonic works. Along the way it challenges students to examine and open themselves to different ways of listening. This course is open to all majors.
