ARTS 106
Fundamentals Of Visual Design
Columbia College Chicago · Fall 2026
Catalog description
2D: Color + Design introduces students to the principles and elements of two-dimensional visual design, with a strong emphasis on color theory and the role of light in visual composition. Using a variety of media including industry-standard software (for example, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other Adobe Creative Suite programs), students explore color harmony, the psychological effects of color, and the impact of lighting on visual perception. Students are guided through stages of representation, abstraction, and symbolic interpretation to deepen their understanding of design unity, emphasis, and color organization. Through lectures, critiques, and hands-on projects, the course encourages critical thinking and effective communication, equipping students with a foundational language for future studies in the visual arts.
