Catalog description
This introductory course is a global survey of the history of visual arts from pre-historic times through 1800. Students study examples from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe in a thematic and chronological order. Class activities focus on various civilizations, periods, and styles around the world. Students explore the aesthetic values of diverse cultures in relation to historical, socio-political, religious, and other contexts for the creation of art to inform their own creative practice.?Students will be introduced to various methods of historical investigation through a balance of lectures, discussions, field trips, primary and secondary source readings, group projects, and writing assignments.
