Catalog description

Analysis of Native American history from prehistory to the present. The course considers the integrity and viability of indigenous societies in North America, the dynamic process of cultural persistence and change, and the clash of cultures that began with European conquest. In particular, it traces the formation and operation of U.S. government policy toward the “first peoples” over the course of generations. Particular attention will be given to the pre-contact traditions, survival strategies, and tribal sovereignty exemplified by native communities in the U.S.
