COMM 421
Methods in Interviewing, Narrative, and Storytelling
Columbia College · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
In this course, students will understand interviewing both as a theory and a practice. Through engaging with in-depth qualitative methods, students will explore the art and science of the interview including how interviewing can be adapted to fit a broad range of situational goals, the tactics for securing your subjects’ cooperation, and hands-on exercises to hone these skills. Through a series of in-depth interviewing projects, students will examine how a variety of qualitative research approaches help us understand narrative and storytelling by considering issues of ontology (ways of being), epistemology (ways of knowing), methodology (ways of examining), and representation (ways of writing and reporting). Students will gain interviewing skills that will set them up to succeed in organizational, client/practitioner, research, and mass communication settings.
