Introduction to Sociology

Catalog description

Three lecture. Fundamental concepts of social organization, culture, race, ethnicity, socialization, social institutions, and social change. Students will be able to: define sociology and explain how it differs from other social sciences; identify and describe the three main classical sociological theories: functional, conflict and symbolic interactionism; recognize the link between culture and society as it relates to values, beliefs, and norms; demonstrate how social structure is interconnected to social groups, status and roles; investigate the main agents of socialization: family, peers, and media; explain the link between perceived deviance and crime in the U.S.; describe sociological explanations of urban trends in the U.S.; and discuss collective behavior and social movements in the U.S. General Education: Social and Behavioral Sciences, Institutions in the Americas
