Catalog description

Three lecture. The course examines the impact of substance use and abuse on the individual and on society. In addition, the course provides a balanced account of all of the aspects of this subject, interpreting its complex nature. Students will be able to: describe significant historical developments contributing to our current problems with drugs; describe the pharmacological bases of drug actions; identify alternatives to drug use; discuss theoretical perspectives of abuse and addiction; critically analyze the drug/alcohol literature and assess its relevance; discuss the present and future implications fo drug and alcohol policies and the efficacy of treatment. Prerequisite(s): PSY 101 .
