1 1 This course is specifically designed to provide an advanced placement nursing assistant course offering to students with a background in healthcare. The advanced placement course is limited to students with at least one year of full-time employment (1500 hours), or two years of part-time employment (totaling 1500 hours), in the direct provision of health care within the past 5 years. Examples of full-time employment may include (but are not limited to) Caregivers, Medical Assistants, EMTs, Paramedics, Home Health Aides, Respiratory Therapists, Physical Therapists/Assistants, Occupational Therapists/Assistants, Anesthesia Technicians, Surgical Technicians, Radiology Technicians, or approval by the Coconino Community College Director of Nursing. Additionally, a student may be a candidate for this program if they have successfully completed course work that included direct patient care experiences in allied health, medicine, or nursing, within the past five years. The Certified Nursing Assistant’s role will focus on the adult population which covers the basic concepts required to become a member of the health care team in long-term and acute care settings. Topics to be taught include (but are not limited to) an understanding of activities of daily living, communication, basic nutrition, basic emergency care, principles of infection control, medical terminology, resident safety, and ethical/legal aspects of health care. Fundamental nursing skills based upon the basic nursing concepts above will be reinforced through giving individualized resident care via a hybrid classroom, skills lab practice, and clinical rotations. Students will be able to: Students will be able to: Explain and identify the roles and responsibilities of the nursing assistant. Discuss professionalism in the workplace. Describe effective communication with residents and other members of the health care team. Identify how culture affects the care of a resident. Identify elements of a safe environment for the resident, family, and health care team. Describe the chain of infection and general principles of infection control. Understand the principles of basic nutrition to meet the resident’s dietary needs. Identify a medical emergency and basic emergency care. Describe care for the peri-operative resident. Describe care for the resident with special needs. Identify the function, structure, and common abnormalities of each of the body systems. Demonstrate basic nursing assistant interventions. Prerequisite(s): MAT 088 or higher math course or placement into MAT 097 or above. ENG 098 or higher English course or placement above ENG 098. Grading Option: Letter Grade Only
