Catalog description

Four Lecture. Further development of speaking and writing communication skills with emphasis on compositions and readings of the Diné language. Taught in Navajo. NAV 201 or consent of instructor. Students will be able to: analyze and evaluate reading passages in the target language that have a clear, underlying internal structure; demonstrate comprehension of the main idea and the majority of details of written descriptions of objects, people, places, and events, authentic passages that relate to topics containing subjective information and/or current events; Employ the writing process in the target language (e.g., organizing thoughts, composing, revising, proofreading) to describe, express opinions, and narrate a series of events using the past, present or future time frames. Give instructions or commands in the target language. Express feelings, opinions, and hypotheses in the target language using subjunctive and conditional constructions. Initiate, respond, and contribute to face-to-face conversations in the target language with a moderate amount of spontaneity using present and past tenses. Comprehend the main idea and a majority of details of narrations of events, descriptions and/or opinions from a speaker who uses natural pace and articulation of the target language Interpret cultural norms, values, beliefs, and regional variations within areas where the target language is used.
