Three lecture. History and development of jazz music from its origin to the present day. Students will be able to: identify and discuss significant dates, places and names of milestones in jazz history; identify instruments such as soprano, alto, tenor, baritone saxophones, trumpets, flugelhorns, trombones, clarinets, flutes, guitars, drums and other percussion instruments; identify, analyze and discuss specific works of music by influential musicians; analyze and discuss contributions made to the development of jazz by African-Americans and how attitudes toward them hindered many from achieving critical and financial success during their careers as well as promoting and enabling their integration into American and world culture.
