3 Lecture. An examination of the U.S. Constitution as it relates to the law enforcement function. Includes statutory law and judicial decisions governing the areas of arrest, search and seizure, interrogations and confessions, self-incrimination and other constitutional guarantees. Required in AJS curriculum Students will be able to: describe the historical influences leading up to the drafting of the US Constitution; describe the general provisions of the Bill of Rights; describe the rights protected under the First Amendment; describe the rights protected under the Fourth Amendment; describe the degrees of proof in gathering evidence; describe police authority to conduct a legal search and seizure; describe the historical application of the exclusionary rule; describe the rights protected by the Fifth Amendment; describe the elements of due process of law; describe the rights protected by the Sixth Amendment; describe the rights protected by the Eight Amendment.
