Catalog description

1 Lecture. Advanced familiarization with handguns. Variations of basic shooting stance. Legal and moral repercussions of self-defense. Includes range practice. Students will be able to: describe moral and legal issues pertaining to the use of a handgun; identify contributing factors to accidental injuries/death attributed to firearms; describe factors related to safe possession of a firearm; describe major points involved in shooter/gun handler etiquette; explain safety concerns that are unique to handgun handlers; explain safety rules for transporting a handgun in a vehicle; critique two major methods of storing handguns in the home; identify major components of weapons and ammunition; demonstrate proper basic mechanics in accurately and safely discharging a handgun including: Acceptance of an open weapon grip, stance, sight alignment, breath control, trigger-squeeze, and follow through; compare advantages/disadvantages of single-action versus double-action firing of the weapon; demonstrate proper and safe cleaning of the weapon; demonstrate proficiency in safe handling and use of a revolver; describe the safety design and construction of holsters; demonstrate the four stages of an efficient drawing technique. Prerequisite(s): A grade of C or better in LET 151 or equivalent certified firearms training as reviewed by the Department.
