Three lecture. History of the United States and the peoples and forces that shape it from the end of the Civil War (1865) to the present. Students will be able to: evaluate the impacts of the Civil War and Reconstruction on American history; explain the transformation of the American economy and culture; analyze the evolution of American political institutions; evaluate the contributions of different ethnic, racial and gender groups to American history; discuss the changing role of the United States in the world, including (but not limited to) the rise of American imperialism, U.S. participation in two world wars, and the Cold War; utilize historical evidence and theories to explain and analyze the contemporary United States, its diversity, and the challenges it faces.
