Three lecture. Study of the peoples and forces that comprise the history of the United States from the pre-Columbian era to the end of the Civil War (1865). Students will be able to: explain the complexity and diversity of American society during this period; explain the colonial process and the motivation behind the process; describe the American Revolution, including its major causes and its consequences; explain the contributions of Native Americans and the European and African immigrants to American society; evaluate the institution of slavery in America, the causes for it, and the reasons for its demise; discuss the Civil War, its causes and course, and its aftermath and consequences; explain the evolution of American political institutions; describe the evolution of the American economy and its impact on American culture; utilize the historical evidence and theories presented in this course to explain present-day America.
