Hazardous Materials Awareness

Catalog description
This course presents the basic concepts and techniques related to hazardous materials first response. It is for those individuals who in the course of their normal duties may be first on the scene of an emergency involving hazardous material. First Responders at the awareness level are expected to recognize and identify a hazardous materials incident, protect themselves, call for trained personnel, and secure the area. (Required for EMS 131 . Fire Science students must take FSC 138 ). One half credit hours. Students will be able to: emergency responders at the awareness level shall be trained to meet all competencies of NFPA 472 Chapter 4. In addition, awareness level responders shall receive training to meet applicable United States Department of Transportation (DOT), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements; verification of the students’ successful course completion will be determined by the administration of both pre and post course written examination.
