2 0 This two-credit course is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex world of scientific literature and research. The course will focus on developing critical thinking, information literacy, and research skills relevant to the field of forestry. Students will explore the principles of scientific inquiry, the structure of scientific papers, and effective communication of scientific ideas. Through practical exercises, readings, and discussions, students will gain the tools they need to become scientifically literate and engaged members of the forestry community. Students will be able to: Define the principles of scientific inquiry and the scientific method. Formulate a testable hypothesis. Contrast the western scientific method with other ways of knowing scientific facts such as Traditional Ecological Knowledge. Critically evaluate and analyze scientific literature related to forestry. Develop effective reading and note-taking strategies for scientific texts. Navigate online databases and libraries to access relevant scientific research. Demonstrate the ability to summarize and synthesize scientific information. Communicate scientific ideas effectively in both written and oral formats.
